Who profits from the sale of Native American made jewelry and crafts?
I went to a Cherokee Nation festival in Pennsylvania recently and bought some jewelry from some Native vendors. There were some vendors who were — shall I just say, they didn’t seem to be indigenous Americans or any kind of person of color (but I could be wrong and they could have been full-blooded Lenape) — who were selling some gorgeous items at ridiculously high prices. They said their works came from the Southwest but their business was in Florida. I overheard them telling some other people of no-color that the proceeds go to some tribal something but my friend warned me that this vendor could be lying and to not believe it. They had some gorgeous pieces but I couldn’t afford any of them but I was also feeling some kind of way about these folk selling high-priced stuff at a pow-wow. If I were to purchase an expensive item, I would prefer to buy it directly from the Native artist him/herself.
i’m glad you are thinking about this. the sad fact is, the jewelry made in the southwest by native artisans is usually bought by non natives and then marked up 2000% or more. just another example of a system that keeps indigenous people down. if you ever have a chance to go out west, look for these people and buy directly from them.
and you were probably right about the people in PA. there are many “pow wows” there that are nothing more than wannabe gatherings. they call themselves many things but they are just white people playing indian.
proceed with the thumbs down because truth hurts.
